Throughout the novel its clear that Gatsby acts impulsively. The things he does, like throwing frequent extravagent parties doesn't add up until explained as a way to lure Daisy back into Jay's life. You later learn that Gatsby once loved her, and things didnt work out because of his lack of money. He never stopped thinking about her when he went off to get as much money as possible to win her back, at any cost.
Even with Daisy married and a mother, Gatsby won't give up his idea that they can run away together, he could buy her nice things and build her the perfect life if only they could pick up right where they left off. He seems to think in the terms of their past relationship. For him, his love life stopped when he went to go get rich for her, but her life became a lot more complicated.
